Chapter 1

UNKNOWN NIGHTMARES

Aaron Hunter

I was supposed to be asleep. I was supposed to be alone.

So, why am I hearing whispers in the dark?

They slither into my ears like ice-cold fingers, prickling my skin with dread. The same question, over and over.

“What is on the other side?”

I try to move, but my limbs feel weighted down, as if gravity has suddenly quintupled. The darkness around me shifts, ripples, and then—

The universe explodes behind my eyes.

Images assault me from every direction. All at once, they flash by, dreams of yesterday, nightmares of the past—visions- hundreds, thousands, maybe. I make out only a few. I feel weirdly at home as it happens, almost nostalgic, as if these sights are from a lifetime ago. And yet, I recognise nothing. So, whose memories are these? But they can’t be mine. I’d remember living these moments, wouldn’t I?

Their ceaseless murmurs are the only thing my dazed senses can make out in this space. But soon enough, I see something. No! I see… everything.

The whispering gets louder. “What is on the other side?”

More images flash by. They seem clearer: a garden littered with broken toy soldiers. No… It’s a battlefield with corpses as far as the eye can see. Two children play-fighting, standing over a third, pretending to be dead. There are two soldiers, both ancient in their origins, with a futuristic appearance. Standing apart from each other, with a third rotting on the floor, pierced through the heart by a spear.

A white-hot pain blooms in my chest, spreading like wildfire through every muscle and nerve ending. I try to scream, but no sound emerges.

The images are constantly in flux, shifting and transforming.

“What’s on the other side?”
